Sciatica has many causes.

Sciatica (Si At ika) is a generic term used when someone has pain traveling down the leg. The sciatica nerve is actually a “bundle” of nerve roots that originate in the low back. You have one on the left and one on the right. These nerve roots join together right about at the level of your buttock and continue to make their way down your leg. Each of these individual nerve roots controls a different area of sensation and a different muscular function. An example would be standing on your tip toes or rocking back on your heels. Both of these movements are controlled by two separate nerves. Although the term sciatica describes pain that travels down your leg, it does nothing to tell you the CAUSE of the pain down your leg! The actual causes can be many. The “pinched” nerve doesn’t really exist, but the nerve roots can become compressed due to mechanical problems such as improper movement in your spine, a muscular spasm that is compressing or pulling on a nerve, or a more complicated problem such as bulging or herniated discs and tumors. Once the actual cause is found, corrective treatment can begin. Just because “Aunt Martha” had sciatica that got better over time, doesn’t mean that the cause of YOUR sciatica is the same. Don’t guess with your health. If you are having pain into the buttocks or legs, call the office today to be evaluated. Dr. Costello can find the cause of your sciatica and start you on your way to relief today!

Golf exercises are key to better performance. Balance, strength and flexibility.

Golfing injuries are some of the most common complaints I see. It usually starts the weekend of the Masters Tournament when you get the “itch” to play. The biggest mistake I see is from those who purchase a “jumbo” bucket of balls and starting hammering away with the driver. As you know, golf is not about doing that. At most, you swing the driver once (twice if youre prone to using the Mulligan) and then you walk a few minutes before you swing again. The overload to the low back structures, shoulders and hips associated with this quickly and repeated activity can create strains, sprains and repetitive use injuries. Not only is proper mechanics the most important part of the golf swing, but proper warm up and common sense as well. Most golfers are willing to spend $500 for a new driver hoping to gain an extra 10 yards. But as the saying goes, it is the CARPENTER and not the tools! Dr. Costello can help you with golf specific exercises to strengthen your core, increase flexibility and improve balance. With the prominence of Tiger Woods in golf, the rest of the field has learned that exercise is vital to their performance and success. Are you too good to exercise? Save your money from the driver and buy a new putter! Thats the club you use most often each round!

Dr. Costello can provide a videotaped review of your golf swing to demonstrate weaknesses in your balance, flexibility and form. Golf specific exercises will be prescribed.
